Interior design is a colour-critical profession, and monitor advice for it is almost always written by people who play games.
The short answer
Colour accuracy first, then size, then resolution. You approve whites and judge stone on this screen, so if it lies the decision is wrong before it reaches the client: the floor is full sRGB coverage stated by the manufacturer, better is factory calibration with a report in the box, best is hardware calibration you can redo annually — panels drift, so calibration is maintenance rather than a purchase. For drafting, physical size decides how much drawing you can see at a working zoom: 27″ is the practical minimum, 32″ is excellent with palettes open, and 24″ belongs beside a main screen rather than under one.
Colour accuracy first
You approve whites. You judge stone against a render. You check whether under-cabinet lighting has turned honed marble yellow. Every one of those decisions happens on a screen, and if the screen is lying, the decision is wrong before it reaches the client.
Minimum: full sRGB coverage, stated by the manufacturer rather than implied.
Better: factory calibration with a report in the box.
Best: the above plus hardware calibration you can redo annually.
Panels drift. A screen accurate in year one is not accurate in year four, which is why calibration is maintenance rather than a purchase.
Size beats resolution
For drafting, physical size determines how much drawing you can see at a working zoom level. Resolution determines how sharp it is. Seeing more matters more.

The second screen is the real upgrade
If the choice is one excellent monitor or two good ones, take two.
Drawing on one screen with the schedule, the reference image and the client email on the other removes a constant cost you have stopped noticing. It is the single change most designers report as immediately worth it.
Keep the second screen matched if you can. Two different panels means two different whites, which reintroduces the problem you bought a good monitor to solve.
Reading the spec sheet, and calibrating it
Four numbers decide whether a screen can be trusted with a finish approval, and they are all published.
- sRGB coverage — look for 99–100%, stated as coverage rather than as “16.7 million colours”, which is meaningless.
- Delta E — the error between what is asked for and what appears. Under 2 is the threshold at which a difference stops being visible to most people; a factory report quoting it is a good sign.
- Panel type — IPS for colour work. VA has better contrast and shifts with viewing angle, which is exactly wrong for judging a finish while somebody leans over your shoulder.
- Uniformity — whether the centre and the corners agree. Rarely published, worth checking in a review, and the reason a cheap large screen can be worse than a good small one.
Calibration is maintenance, not a purchase: panels drift, and a screen accurate in year one is not accurate in year four. A colorimeter is roughly the price of one styled render and lasts for years. Until you own one, the honest fallback is to approve critical finishes from physical samples in daylight rather than from the screen, and to say so to the client — which is a more professional answer than trusting a display nobody has profiled.
What to ignore
Refresh rate. A gaming specification. It changes nothing about how a drawing looks.
Curved panels. Fine for media, mildly unhelpful for drafting where straight lines are the subject.
Very high resolution on a small panel. You will scale the interface up and lose the benefit you paid for.
If you work on a laptop
An external monitor is the highest-value accessory you can buy, ahead of a better laptop. A modest machine with a good screen produces better colour decisions than a powerful machine with a mediocre one.

One thing a monitor cannot do
No screen replaces a physical sample. Metamerism — two colours matching under one light and not another — is not a display problem and cannot be solved by one.
A good monitor means the render you approve resembles the render your client receives. It does not mean the paint will look like the screen in their north-facing room.
