Nobody publishes an honest total, because the honest total is uncomfortable. Here is the structure of the cost, which is more useful than a price list that expires.
Software pricing changes constantly, so specific figures date quickly. What does not change is the shape of the cost, and that is what determines whether your stack is expensive or merely large.
Two pricing models, and why it matters
Subscription — you pay annually and keep paying. Stop paying and the software stops working. Autodesk, Adobe and most render engines work this way now.
Perpetual — you buy a version and own it. Upgrades cost extra and are optional. Affinity, BricsCAD and some Vectorworks tiers still offer this.
The rule of thumb: perpetual wins over three or more years, unless file compatibility forces you to stay current. That exception matters. If a client sends a file saved in a version newer than yours, owning your software does not help.

The biggest line, and the biggest saving
CAD is almost always the largest single cost. It is also the hardest to change, because it is the tool your file exchange depends on and the one your habits are built around.
Presentation software is the easiest saving. Swapping a creative-suite subscription for Affinity removes a recurring cost entirely and, for interior work, the capability difference is negligible. If you are looking for one change that reduces annual spend without affecting output, this is it.
The FF&E line is the one to interrogate. Dedicated procurement platforms are excellent above a certain project volume and pure overhead below it. Most studios could run schedules in a spreadsheet for a year and lose nothing except some presentation polish.
The costs that are not on the invoice
- Learning time. Free software is not free if it takes three months to become productive. Value your own hours honestly and Blender is not always cheaper than the paid tool you already know.
- Hardware. Render engines set the specification of the machine. Choosing a GPU-heavy renderer is a hardware decision as much as a software one — see laptop specs for interior design.
- Version lock. Saving files in the newest format can make them unopenable for collaborators on older versions. This costs time rather than money, and it costs it at the worst moment.
- Per-seat multiplication. Costs that are tolerable for one designer become the largest overhead in a five-person studio, and they scale linearly while your fees do not.
What is genuinely free
Blender — free, no commercial restriction, professional ceiling.
Twinmotion — free below a revenue threshold, and it is a real renderer rather than a crippled trial.
Student and educator licences — AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino and V-Ray, all free if you qualify. This is the most valuable item on the page and the least well advertised. If you are eligible, claim everything now; you cannot claim it later.

Building a stack you can afford
- Starting out — Blender and SketchUp Free while you learn, then pay for the one tool that produces your deliverable.
- Solo, working — one CAD tool, SketchUp, one real-time renderer, Affinity. Take the free renderer tier if you qualify.
- Small studio — the same, but check whether every seat needs every licence. Frequently one person needs the renderer and everyone is paying for it.
One last piece of arithmetic
Before adding a tool to the stack, work out what it costs per project rather than per year. A renderer at a few hundred a year across six projects is trivial. The same renderer across one project a year is not.
That framing also settles the outsourcing question faster than any feature comparison, because it puts a licence and a commissioned deliverable in the same units.
