The mistake almost every beginner makes is learning tools in the order they appear on a course syllabus rather than the order they become useful.
Here is the order that produces employable work fastest, and the reasoning behind it.
The short answer
Learn them in the order they become useful, not the order a syllabus lists them. Start with SketchUp: modelling teaches spatial thinking — how a ceiling height feels, why a 750 corridor differs from a 900 — and CAD does not, because CAD lets you draw a plan that could never be built without noticing. It is also the fastest route to showing somebody something, which is what earns a first job. Correct dimension strings matter, and they matter later. Then AutoCAD for documentation, then a renderer, and a spreadsheet throughout.
First: SketchUp
Learn to model before you learn to draw. That sounds backwards and it is not.
Modelling teaches spatial thinking — how a ceiling height feels, why a corridor at 750 is different from one at 900, what happens to a room when the window moves. Those are design skills, and CAD does not teach them because CAD lets you draw a plan that could never be built without ever noticing.
SketchUp is also the fastest route to showing somebody something. In a first job, in an interview, or with a first client, the ability to produce a view of a space is immediately valuable. The ability to produce a correct dimension string is valuable later.
Time to useful: about a week. Time to comfortable: about a month.
Second: a real-time renderer
Enscape or Twinmotion, whichever you can get. This is deliberately second rather than fifth, because it multiplies the value of the modelling you just learned.
A grey SketchUp model shows a client geometry. A rendered view shows them a room. The difference in how people respond is enormous, and the learning curve for real-time rendering is days rather than months.
Twinmotion is free below a revenue threshold, which usually means free while you are learning.
Time to useful: a few days.
Third: layout and presentation
InDesign, Affinity Publisher, or Canva. You now have images; you need to arrange them into something that makes an argument.
This is the most undervalued skill on the list. Two designers with identical schemes will get different outcomes based entirely on how the deck is structured — and the one who shows reasoning before images gets decisions rather than opinions.
Time to useful: a week for the software. Longer for the judgement.
Fourth: AutoCAD
Now learn to document. By this point you understand space, so a drawing set is a translation exercise rather than an abstract one.
Learn plans, elevations, sections and dimensioning. Ignore 3D in AutoCAD entirely — you have SketchUp for that and mixing them is how people waste a year.
Time to productive: a few weeks.

What to ignore for now
Revit. Months of learning for a benefit that only appears on large coordinated projects. Learn it when an employer or a project requires it, not speculatively — the skill decays if unused.
Offline rendering. V-Ray and Corona are deep tools. Real-time rendering covers everything you need until image quality is what somebody is paying you for.
Blender. Free and excellent, and a three-month learning curve. Worth it eventually. Not first.
Every plugin you see recommended. Learn the base tool properly. Plugins solve problems you have not had yet.
Twelve weeks, in order
A plan beats a shelf of tutorials, because the failure mode for beginners is breadth rather than difficulty. Roughly an hour a day.

Notice that it is the same room throughout. Twelve weeks on one project teaches more than twelve tutorials on twelve, and at the end you have a portfolio piece that runs from concept to procurement — which is precisely what an employer or first client is looking for.
Three mistakes worth avoiding
Learning four tools badly instead of one well. Depth in SketchUp beats surface familiarity with five applications, in interviews and in practice.
Believing the software is the skill. It is not. Proportion, light, material and sequencing are the skills. Software is how you express them, and a beautiful render of a badly proportioned room is still a badly proportioned room.
Waiting until you are good enough to show anything. Model a room you have been in. Render it. Put it in a deck. That loop — complete, badly, quickly — teaches more than another tutorial.
