Consistency is the whole point

Open any category page and the tell is immediate. Slightly different white balance between rows. One product shot from marginally higher than its neighbour. Shadows falling left on some and right on others. Each image is fine; the grid is a mess.

That happens because products arrive at different times and get photographed in different sessions, sometimes in different studios, sometimes years apart. Holding a lighting setup across that is a discipline problem that almost nobody solves.

In CGI it is not a discipline problem. The camera, the lighting rig and the background are a file. Product forty is lit identically to product one because it is literally the same lighting.

The last row is where the economics live. Photographing that full set for every colourway is a project. Rendering it is a batch job.

Marketplace requirements

Marketplaces do not require photography. They require accuracy and a technical specification — usually a pure white background on the main image, a minimum resolution, and the product occupying a set proportion of the frame.

Renders meet those specifications easily, and in one respect meet them better: a pure white background is trivially exact in CGI and requires careful lighting and retouching in a studio.

What matters is the accuracy rule, and it is not a formality. An image that misrepresents colour, scale or finish increases returns, and returns cost more than the image did.

The returns argument nobody makes

Most e-commerce imagery conversations are about conversion. The more interesting number for furniture and homeware is returns, because a returned sofa costs more than a returned shirt by an enormous margin.

Two rendered images reduce returns specifically.

A scale image — the product shown against something of known size, or with dimension callouts. "It was bigger than I thought" is one of the most common return reasons in furniture, and it is an imagery failure rather than a product failure.

An accurate material close-up — if the weave, sheen and colour are right, the customer's expectation is calibrated before the box arrives.

Both are cheap to produce in CGI and awkward to shoot well.

The template that keeps a grid consistent

Consistency is not a discipline problem in CGI, but only if somebody writes the template down once. Six settings, fixed for the whole range and reused for every product added later:

  • Camera height and distance, expressed relative to the product rather than in absolute terms, so a tall lamp and a low stool are framed alike.
  • Lens. One focal length for the entire catalogue. Mixing 35 and 50 mm is what makes a grid feel subtly wrong without anybody identifying why.
  • The lighting rig, saved as a file. Not recreated per product — opened.
  • Background value. Pure white for marketplaces that require it; one named off-white for your own site. Written as a colour value, not as “white”.
  • Margin. The product occupies the same proportion of the frame every time, with the same clear space around it.
  • Shadow. One direction, one softness, forever.

Save it as a scene file and a one-page note. The note matters as much as the file, because in two years the person opening it will not be the person who set it up.

Where this goes wrong

The failure mode is not ugly renders. It is flattering ones.

A render lit to make a fabric look richer than it is, or a colour pushed a little warmer because it looks better on the grid, produces a listing that converts well and returns badly. That is worse than a plain photograph.

Calibrate against a physical sample and accept the less flattering version. The image is a promise, and the product has to keep it.

What to render first

Not the whole catalogue. Start with the products where imagery is doing the most work:

  • Your best sellers — the return on better imagery is largest where volume already is.
  • Products with many variants — this is where CGI's cost advantage is most extreme.
  • Anything with a high return rate — if scale or colour confusion is causing returns, imagery is the cheapest available fix.

Build those properly, measure over a quarter, then decide about the rest.
