The honest answer is not "CGI is better". It is that the two win in different places, and the dividing line is almost always the number of variants.
We produce CGI for textile and homeware brands, so treat this as an interested opinion — but the arithmetic below is the arithmetic we would run before quoting, and it sometimes points at a photographer.
The short answer
Neither wins outright; the dividing line is the number of variants. A photoshoot carries a large fixed cost — studio, styling, photographer, assistant, samples shipped and steamed — and then cheap additional shots, except that every new colourway means re-dressing, re-steaming and re-shooting. CGI inverts that: the first image is expensive because the scene, the simulation and the material must be built, and every colourway afterwards is a material swap on the same camera, lighting and folds. Few variants favour the camera; many favour the render.
The variant maths
A photoshoot has a large fixed cost and a modest marginal cost. Studio, styling, photographer, assistant, samples shipped and steamed. Once the set is built, additional shots are relatively cheap — but each new colourway means re-dressing the bed, re-steaming, re-shooting.
CGI inverts that. The first image is expensive because the scene, the simulation and the material have to be built. Every colourway after that is a material swap — the same camera, the same lighting, the same folds.

Where photography wins outright
Being straight about this, because the answer is not always us.
People. Models in a bedroom scene are photography's territory. CGI humans in a soft, intimate setting are expensive and frequently unconvincing, and an uncanny figure ruins an otherwise good image.
Very fine sheers and complex prints. A gauze curtain or a busy floral at close range is difficult to simulate convincingly and easy to photograph.
A single hero shot with no range behind it. If you need one image of one product, the fixed cost of building a CGI scene is hard to justify.
Authenticity as the brand position. Some brands sell on visible craft and imperfection. Photography carries that more honestly, and audiences increasingly notice when it does not.
Where CGI wins decisively
Ranges. Twelve colourways is one build and eleven swaps. This is the single strongest argument and it is purely commercial.
Consistency. Identical camera, identical light, identical styling across an entire product grid. Achieving that photographically requires enormous discipline across multiple days. In CGI it is the default, and it is why a rendered range page looks deliberate rather than assembled.
Timing. Renders can exist before the product does. That lets you show a buyer a range before committing to manufacture, or open pre-orders on stock that has not shipped — a genuine commercial advantage rather than a cost saving.
Revisions. Changing the wall colour behind the bed is a click. On a shoot it is a repaint or a reshoot.
The quality question, answered properly
The thing that separates convincing textile CGI from the obvious kind is not render quality. It is whether the folds were simulated or sculpted.
A modelled fold is a decision someone made. A simulated fold is a consequence — of weave, weight, gravity and where the fabric was last touched. The eye has watched cloth obey those rules its whole life and notices instantly when it does not, even if the viewer cannot say why.
The second giveaway is symmetry. Real bedding is never symmetrical. Cheap renders are.

The break-even, worked
You do not need our arithmetic — you need yours, and it is one line.
A photoshoot is a large fixed cost plus a small cost per shot. CGI is a large cost for the first image of a product plus a small cost per variant, because the scene, the lighting and the simulated folds are reused. Write both as a sum:
Photography = studio + styling + crew + sample logistics + (shots × cost per shot)
CGI = build of the first image + (variants × cost per variant)
Then solve for the number of variants where they meet. For most home-textile ranges it falls somewhere between six and twelve colourways — below that the camera usually wins, above it the render does, and the gap widens with every SKU added afterwards because the CGI scene is already built.
Two things skew it. Re-shoots skew towards CGI, because a changed colourway is a material swap rather than a second shoot. And a single hero image with real people and genuine imperfection skews towards photography, at any number of variants.
The answer most brands land on
Not one or the other. Photograph the campaign, render the catalogue.
Two or three photographed lifestyle images with models carry the brand story. Every colourway, size and detail shot is rendered, consistently, at a fraction of the cost of shooting them.
That split plays to both strengths and it is what we see working brands actually do.

How many images do you need of the same product in different finishes?
One or two — call a photographer. Six or more — the arithmetic has already decided, and it is CGI.
