The badge on the lid is the least useful part of this decision. Two things decide it: whether you render, and how much memory you buy.

The short answer

Nothing crashes; it simply takes longer and keeps taking longer. So: drafting, modelling, moodboards and presentation work are fine on an Air. Memory matters more than the model

A well-specified Air with generous memory beats a base Pro with the minimum, for most interior work. On Apple Silicon that memory is shared with the graphics processor, so it sets the ceiling on scene size directly.

If the budget forces a choice, take the Air with more memory over the Pro with less. This is the opposite of how these machines are usually compared.

When the throttling actually bites

“It throttles” is true and unhelpful on its own, because it depends entirely on how long your tasks run.

The workaround, if you already own an Air: batch the long jobs and start them when you stop working. A machine that renders slowly overnight is not costing you anything — and it is a better answer than buying a Pro to save ten minutes at four o’clock.

The screen argument for the Pro

Underrated in every comparison. Interior design is colour-critical — you approve whites, judge stone against renders, check whether under-cabinet light has yellowed marble. The Pro display is meaningfully better for that, and it is a professional argument rather than a luxury one.

It does not remove the need for physical samples. It does mean the image you approve resembles the image your client receives.

The verdict

Air if you draft, model, present and commission your rendering. Specify memory generously and buy an external monitor with the savings.

Pro if you render your own work weekly, or if you present from the laptop often enough that the screen is doing commercial work.
