The honest answer is yes, with one specification caveat that costs more than people expect and one workflow caveat that no amount of money fixes.
A MacBook Pro is a genuinely good interior design machine in 2026. The screen is the best in the industry for judging colour, the build survives site visits, and Apple Silicon handles modelling and real-time rendering without the fan noise that made older machines unpleasant in client meetings.
But the decision is not really about the laptop. It is about two numbers and one piece of software.
Memory is the whole decision
On Apple Silicon, the processor and graphics share a single pool of memory. That is an advantage — the GPU can address far more memory than a typical discrete card — but it means the memory figure is doing two jobs at once.
- 16 GB — fine for SketchUp modelling, drafting, presentation work and light real-time rendering. It is the floor, not a recommendation.
- 32 GB — where a full interior scene with proper textures, vegetation and FF&E stops being a fight. This is the figure most working designers should buy.
- 64 GB and up — only worth it if you render heavy scenes yourself, daily.
The mistake we see most often is buying a faster chip with less memory. For interior work that is the wrong trade almost every time. A slower chip finishes the render eventually. Insufficient memory means it does not finish at all.
Which chip actually matters
The base Pro-tier chip is enough for modelling, documentation, real-time rendering and presentation. The Max-tier chips buy you final-frame render speed and more memory bandwidth.
That is worth paying for if visualisation is your business. If you are a designer who outsources rendering, it is money that would do more work as memory, storage or a second monitor.
MacBook Air or Pro?
The Air is a better machine than its price suggests and it is genuinely sufficient for a designer whose week is drawings, schedules, moodboards and client meetings.
Where it stops working is sustained load. The Air has no fan, so a long render or a heavy model session causes it to throttle — it does not crash, it simply slows down and stays slow. If rendering is occasional, that is an acceptable trade for the weight and the silence. If it is weekly, buy the Pro.
The screen is an underrated argument
Interior design is a colour-critical profession and most people making hardware recommendations ignore this entirely.
Specifying a warm white, judging a marble sample against a render, or checking whether under-cabinet lighting has turned honed stone yellow — these are decisions made on a screen, and the display quality genuinely changes the outcome. This is the strongest argument for a Mac that nobody makes.
It does not remove the need for physical samples. It does mean the render you approve looks like the render your client receives.
The one thing that is not fixable
Revit does not run on macOS, in any version, and it is not coming. If a client, architect or contractor requires Revit deliverables, a MacBook Pro alone will not do the job.
Parallels running Windows on Apple Silicon works for AutoCAD and light Revit use, but it is a compromise you feel daily. If Revit is central to your work, buy a Windows machine and stop reading comparisons.
The verdict
Buy a MacBook Pro if you model, present, draft in 2D and either outsource or lightly do your own rendering. Specify 32 GB, prioritise memory over chip tier, and budget for an external monitor.
Do not buy one if Revit is a deliverable, or if your business is producing high volumes of final-frame path-traced imagery — in which case a Windows workstation with a discrete GPU does more work per pound.
For most interior designers the hardware is not the constraint. The drawing set is.
