These two tools get compared as if one is the upgrade. They are not on the same ladder. They answer different questions, and choosing wrongly costs you months rather than money.

The question underneath "SketchUp or Revit" is really: am I producing geometry, or am I producing a coordinated database? Everything else follows from that.

The actual difference

SketchUp models geometry. You push and pull surfaces into the shape you want. A wall is a wall because it looks like one and you called it one. This is fast, intuitive, and forgiving of the way designers actually think — which is spatially, and often before the decision is final.

Revit models information. A wall is an object that knows its construction, its fire rating, its cost code and which rooms it separates. Change it once and every plan, section, elevation and schedule updates.

That difference is the whole comparison. Revit's coordination is bought with rigidity: you must define things properly before you can move fast, and early-stage exploration is slower. SketchUp's speed is bought with manual work: nothing updates itself.

Where SketchUp genuinely wins

Speed of thought. You can model a room in the time it takes to correctly define a Revit wall type. For a client meeting on Thursday, that is not a small advantage.

Iteration. Interior design involves showing people three options. SketchUp lets you produce three; Revit encourages you to produce one properly.

The extension ecosystem. Fifteen years of plugins for exactly the tasks interior designers do — joinery, curtains, stairs, tile layouts.

Rendering. Enscape, V-Ray, Twinmotion and a dozen others plug straight in. This matters because visualisation is often the deliverable.

It runs on a Mac, natively and well. Revit does not, at all — covered in Windows or Mac for interior design.

Where Revit genuinely wins

Coordination at scale. On a hundred-sheet package, a late change to a wall type in SketchUp means finding every affected drawing by hand. In Revit it is one edit.

Schedules that cannot drift. Door schedules, room data and finish schedules generate from the model. They cannot disagree with the drawings because they are the same data.

Working inside somebody else's model. If the architect is in Revit and you are the interiors consultant, being in Revit is not a preference, it is the job.

Change management. Late-stage changes on large projects are where Revit repays its learning curve, all at once.

Which one, honestly

  • Residential, boutique commercial, solo or small studio — SketchUp. It covers the work, it is faster, and the money saved on training buys rendering.
  • Large commercial, healthcare, hospitality, workplace — Revit, usually because the project mandates it rather than because you chose it.
  • Working as a consultant to architects — whatever they are in. Your preference is not the deciding input.
  • Student or career-changer — SketchUp first, always. Revit second, when a job needs it.

The both answer

Plenty of studios run both, and it is not indecision. Concept and client-facing work happens in SketchUp because it is faster and renders better. Documentation happens in Revit because coordination is where errors cost money.

The cost is maintaining two models of the same project, which drift unless somebody owns the relationship between them. That job is real and it is usually nobody's.

A note on LayOut

SketchUp's construction-drawing companion is included with Pro and is consistently underused. It produces dimensioned, annotated sheets linked to the model — not as automated as Revit, but far more capable than most designers assume.

If you rejected SketchUp because "it cannot do drawings", that conclusion was probably drawn without opening LayOut.

The verdict

SketchUp for most interior designers, most of the time. Revit when the project size or the client's process requires it — and when that happens you will know, because somebody will tell you.

Do not learn Revit speculatively. It is months of your life and the skill decays if unused.
