In architecture this argument is largely over. In interior design it is not, and the reasons are structural rather than nostalgic.
The short answer
AutoCAD still suits most interior work because interior packages are small, and Revit’s coordination advantage scales with sheet count — on a twenty-sheet fit-out the overhead of modelling everything properly outweighs what it saves. Revit stops being optional when you work inside a consultant team that models, when packages grow past that size, or when a client requires BIM deliverables. Switching costs months of fluency, not a weekend, so the honest test is the size and company of the projects you actually take.
Why AutoCAD persists in interiors
Three reasons, none of them habit.
Interior packages are small. Revit's coordination advantage scales with sheet count. On a twenty-sheet fit-out package, the overhead of building everything properly outweighs the saving.
Interiors change late. A client changing a finish in week nine is normal. In 2D that is an edit; in Revit it can mean revisiting a family definition.
Small teams. Revit's real value is multiple people working in one coordinated model. A solo designer producing a fit-out package gets a fraction of that benefit for all of the setup cost.

When Revit stops being optional
- The client or architect mandates it. Most common reason by far, and not a decision you make.
- Large commercial work — healthcare, workplace, hospitality at scale.
- You are one consultant among many and coordination is contractual.
- The schedules must not drift. Door schedules and room data generated from the model cannot disagree with the drawings, because they are the same data.
What the licences actually cost
Do not compare the two prices, because almost nobody ends up paying them. Autodesk lists Revit at roughly one and a half times AutoCAD, but the AEC Collection — which contains AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D and more — lists at close to Revit alone. Once you need both tools the bundle is usually cheaper than the pair, which is why studios that add Revit rarely go back to paying for AutoCAD separately. Figures move every year and vary by region, so check Autodesk’s own pricing rather than a comparison blog.
The licence is still the smallest number in this decision. A month of reduced output while you learn costs more than a year of either subscription.
Test it against your own last three projects
The argument is only settled by your own work, and four counts settle it in ten minutes.
- Sheets per package. Under twenty, AutoCAD is usually faster end to end. Over forty, coordination starts paying for itself.
- People in the model. One, and Revit’s central benefit is unavailable to you. Three or more, and it is most of the value.
- Late changes. Count the ones that arrived after documentation began. Many, and 2D’s tolerance of mess is worth real money.
- Who else models. If the architect and the services engineer both do, being the one who does not makes you the coordination problem.
Three of the four pointing the same way is your answer. Two and two means stay where you are, because switching mid-argument is how studios end up fluent in neither.
What switching actually costs
Not the licence. The licence is the smallest number in this decision.
The real costs are months of reduced productivity while learning, rebuilding your library of blocks and details as Revit families, and a period of producing worse drawings more slowly than you did before.
That investment repays on the right kind of project and never repays on the wrong kind. Do not learn Revit speculatively — it is months of your life and the skill decays if unused.
The third options nobody mentions
The question is usually posed as a pair, and there are three other answers that suit some interior studios better than either.
- Archicad — BIM that behaves like a design tool rather than a database, and native on macOS, which alone puts it ahead of Revit for Mac studios.
- Vectorworks — strong on interiors, with 2D drafting that does not feel like a compromise. Also native on macOS.
- BricsCAD — DWG-native, so it reads and writes the same files as everyone else, and still sold with a perpetual licence, which changes the arithmetic entirely if you intend to keep a version for five years.
None of them removes the problem when a client mandates Revit deliverables. All three remove the subscription arithmetic, and two remove the Windows requirement.
If you are on a Mac
The decision is made for you. Revit has no macOS version and there is no indication of one coming. AutoCAD for Mac is native with four missing features — see can you run AutoCAD on a Mac.
The verdict
AutoCAD for residential, boutique commercial and small studio work. It is faster for the packages you actually produce.
