Three numbers decide whether a laptop copes with interior design work. Three more are marketed hard and matter far less. Here is which is which.
The three that matter
1. Memory
The most common and most expensive mistake is under-buying memory to afford a faster processor. For interior work that trade is wrong nearly every time.
A slower processor finishes the job eventually. Insufficient memory means the application stops responding, the render fails, or the scene will not open at all.
- 16 GB — modelling, drafting, presentation. The floor.
- 32 GB — full scenes with textures and vegetation, several applications at once. Buy this.
- 64 GB — daily heavy rendering only.

2. Graphics, but only if you render
If you use Enscape, Twinmotion, D5 or Lumion, a discrete GPU transforms the experience. Real-time rendering is exactly the workload graphics hardware exists for.
If you draft, model and present, and commission your rendering, integrated graphics on any current chip are genuinely fine. This is the specification most often over-bought by people who will never use it.
On Windows, prefer NVIDIA. Not brand loyalty — most render engines are optimised for CUDA first and some features are NVIDIA-only.
3. Screen
Two things, in this order.
Colour accuracy. Interior design is a colour-critical profession. Specifying a warm white, judging stone against a render, checking whether under-cabinet lighting has yellowed marble — all decided on a screen. Full sRGB coverage is the minimum; wider is better.
Size. Drafting on a 13-inch display is possible and miserable. Either buy 15 inches or more, or accept that you will work at a desk with an external monitor most days. Both are valid; pretending a 13-inch machine is a CAD workstation is not.
Resolution beyond a certain point is marketing. A colour-accurate 1440p panel beats an inaccurate 4K one for this work.
The three that matter less than the marketing suggests
Processor core count. Beyond a reasonable modern chip, extra cores help offline rendering and almost nothing else in an interior workflow. Modelling and CAD are largely single-threaded.
Storage speed. Any current SSD is fast enough. Capacity matters — 1 TB is a sensible floor because render output and texture libraries grow — but the speed difference between a good SSD and a great one is invisible in practice.
Refresh rate. A gaming specification. It changes nothing about how a drawing looks.

The question behind the question
Most people asking about laptop specs are really asking whether they can avoid buying two machines.
You usually can. A well-specified laptop with 32 GB and a discrete GPU handles the whole interior workflow, travels to site, and presents to clients. The compromises — weight, battery, fan noise under load — are real but livable.
The alternative is a modest laptop plus a desktop that does the heavy work. Cheaper for the same performance, and it means two copies of every project file unless you are disciplined about where things live.

If the budget is tight
In priority order: memory first, screen second, graphics third, processor last. That order is the opposite of how laptops are marketed, and it is the order that produces a machine you do not resent in eighteen months.
